Short Description

This module will introduce students to the main techniques used to measure body composition and energy expenditure in clinical and community settings. One of the objectives will be to use simple experimental techniques to explore the relationship between lifestyle and body composition and between activity and energy expenditure. Topics may include:

  • Concepts of human body composition.
  • Anthropometrics - scaling the human frame in health and disease.
  • Body density and body fat measurements - skinfolds, bioelectric impedance, body-line scanning and plethysmography.
  • Indirect calorimetry practical.
  • Anthropometry practical and data analysis.
  • Applying anthropometric and energy expenditure measurements in clinical settings.
Assessment detail
  • Two practical reports of 2,000 and 1,000 words (50% each)
