Foundation Post Descriptions

All trainees should keep in mind that:

  1. Due to a large number of NHS Trust service reconfigurations, all posts may be subject to change (sometimes at short notice) in relation to placement order, specialty, length and site
  2. All F1 and F2 posts are subject to confirmation at any time during your Foundation Programme
  3. As placements may be subject to change, trainees receive a further confirmation of their F2 placements during the F1 year (usually in February)
  4. Foundation training is not in any way training for Specialty.
Trainees will work in a mixture of surgical and medical placements giving them the general training they need in order to achieve Foundation competencies

Each two-year foundation training programme consists of an F1 and F2 post. Each F1 and F2 rotation comprise three four-month placements (specialties). Some placements, such as General Medicine or General Surgery, may contain sub-specialties.

A list of our two-year programmes is published each year during the application period. Please keep in mind that all programmes may be subject to change at any time.

Any questions about specific placements which are not answered in the descriptions published within this section should be directed to individual hospitals. All missing descriptions in the table below will be published as soon as they are received from the relevant NHS Trusts.
