Medical Illustration provides a comprehensive illustrative and visual communication service to users of the UCL Medical School, the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and external clients. The aim of the unit is to support teaching, academic research and to promote best practice for clinical care.

The unit is comprised of three sections, photography, art/graphics and video. All staff are professionally qualified, and strive to achieve the highest standards by combining traditional skills with modern technology. Continual professional development ensures that everyone is up to date with the latest skills, medical terminology and relevant legal requirements.

Prestige publications such as annual reports and prospectuses are produced by the unit and have gone on to win national design awards.

The department is contemporary and boasts the latest in digital technology within a client friendly environment.

The unit is based at the Royal Free Campus of the UCL Medical School which is easily accessible by public transport or road. All visitors are welcome.

WELLCOME IMAGE AWARDS 2011 - David Bishop has won a Special Award in the 2011 Wellcome Image Awards. IMI AWARDS 2010 - Yet again, staff in Medical Illustration have won prestigous Gold Awards in the Institute of Medical Illustrators' annual awards. In 2010 Gold Awards were for the UCL Medical School Guide for Prospective Students (Elaine Hanna, David Bishop and Andrew Gardner) and for the Royal Free NHS Trust Annual Review (Rakhee Bashar and David Bishop). In addition to these awards, members of the team won five Bronze Awards in the same ceremony.

CLINICAL IMAGE DATABASE - The Unit will soon be launching a clinical image database within the Royal Free NHS Trust to enable the secure delivery of medical images to authorised clinical staff within the Trust. Please contact the Unit for more information about this important development.

INFRARED and ULTRAVIOLET - The Unit is currently testing a new camera to enable the recording of IR and UV images. Watch this space for updates as this service develops.
