MBBS Academic Entry Requirements

Applicants should carefully check that they will meet UCL Medical School's minimum academic standard before making an application. The MBBS Entry Requirements document (pdf format) contains full details of the requirements for admission to UCL Medical School.

Applicants who do not have English as a first language are advised to read the information sheet entitled Approved English Language tests for Medicine. Applicants from overseas are advised to read the information sheet entitled Applications from candidates living overseas.

All applicants must take the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT). BMAT will be used to assess scientific aptitude and will focus on scientific abilities relevant to the study of medicine. The BMAT is used, along with other information in the UCAS application, to help us select candidates for interview.

Other Requirements (non-academic)

Health Requirements

All students offered a place in the Medical School must provide a satisfactory general medical report from their own general practitioner (family doctor) before they can be admitted. Detailed guidance regarding the health information required for admission will be provided to successful applicants following their interview.

The Medical School Prospectus contains detailed information about health requirements for medical students.

Minimum Age

Students must be 18 years of age at the time they start the medical degree course. Applicants who apply but would be under 18 at the start of that year's course will be considered for a deferred place or advised to reapply as appropriate. The early clinical contact in our programme means that younger students cannot be admitted as they would not be able to fully participate in the course.

There is no upper age limit.

Criminal Records Disclosure

Admission is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) Section 4(2) (Exemption) Order 1975 and DHSS Circular HC (88) 9 guidelines regarding child protection and police checks. It is also considered important to ensure that an applicant's attitudes and values are such that he or she can reasonably be admitted to the medical profession.
Applicants will therefore be required to undertake a police check through the provisions of the Data Protection Act. Overseas and EU applicants are requested, upon receipt of an offer, to approach their local police force for a police check. UK applicants with an offer of a place, must be checked through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). UCL has decided that police checks will be instigated during the first week of term, when students will be asked to produce a birth certificate, passport, and possibly a driving license, if you have one. On the basis of this documentation we will then complete the CRB form with you and submit the form. You may be asked to contribute to the cost of this procedure.

The Criminal Records Disclosure document (pdf format) contains detailed information about the requirements for Medical School students.
