Each year the GMC asks the School to complete a Medical School Annual Return (MSAR) to feed in to their Quality Assurance processes.
GMC's regional review of London 2012-2013
In 2012-13, as well as providing the MSAR, UCLMS was part of the GMC's regional review of London. The visit took place in November 2012 and the final reports are published below. Several areas of good practice were identified and no serious concerns were reported.
During 2013, UCLMS also participated in the GMC's audit of undergraduate assessment at all UK medical schools. A return was submitted as part of the review process.
The Annual Student Experience Review (ASER) was introduced in 2015 as UCL’s tool for monitoring the quality of teaching and learning and enhancing the student experience. The ASER draws on an evaluation of student satisfaction (including the NSS and Student Barometer) and student feedback (SEQs), reports from external examiners and actions taken by the School in response to them and admissions and progression statistics to develop a Departmental Evaluative Report with a Development and Enhancement Plan. The ASER replaced the Annual Monitoring Exercise (AMR) which was used from 2006-2014. The ASER is also used to assist in the preparation for Internal Quality Reviews (IQR) which are held every 5 years.
Annual Monitoring Reports
Prior to the introduction of the ASER, UCL’s QA processes required each programme to produce an Annual Monitoring Report (AMR) as a means for the College to monitor and enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Each report gave an account of issues from the previous academic year. In 2014-15, the MBBS programme underwent an Augmented Annual Monitoring process, which was a UCL requirement in the year preceding an Internal Quality Review (IQR).
The Internal Quality Review (IQR) is UCL's central academic quality management and enhancement process and includes all academic departments of UCL.
IQRs are conducted every 5 years and the Medical School had an IQR in 2015, having completed the last IQR in 2010. The IQR in 2015 covered both undergraduate and postgraduate activities in the Division, whereas the IQR in 2010 covered only the MBBS programme. The IQR process includes the preparation and submission of a Self Evaluative Statement (SES) and a visit by a QA team from UCL.

The NHS Undergraduate Tariff (NUT), which was previously known as SIFT, is a funding stream provided by Health Education England (HEE) to all NHS Trusts involved in undergraduate medical education. HEE requires the Medical School to provide an annual report covering all the financial and quality processes relating to NUT funding. These reports can be seen below.
The Quality Assurance Unit has a comprehensive,
multi-faceted approach to the quality assurance of the clinical
placements undertaken by students in Years' 4-6 of the MBBS programme.
Visits are one aspect of the quality assurance of these placements.The QAU's visits policy was reviewed in 2016 and the revised policy ca be accessed below.
Visit reports and action plans
The QAU drafts a report and action plan after the visit and
liaises with the relevant Trust to finalise the details of both.
Progress on the action plan is monitored through the Medical Education
Providers' Annual Report, which is submitted to the QAU.
