The UK government’s launch of a Longitude prize, 300 years after the original and this time packaged with a special episode of the BBC’s Horizon programme and an X-Factor-style vote, has kicked up a storm of criticism. The prize has been attacked as shamelessly populist. The £10 million up for grabs is seen as either too small to truly make a difference or too big, diverting resources away from more established research funding, says Dr Jack Stilgoe (UCL Science & Technology Studies) in Research Fortnight (£).
