Dr Anna Tibaijuka, UN Under Secretary-General, to be awarded UCL honorary degree

Dr Anna Tibaijuka, Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, will be one of the four recipients of an honorary degree from UCL at a degree convocation being held on Tuesday 9th September.

Dr Tibaijuka, who is Tanzanian, is Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), aiming to provide shelter and sustainable settlements for all the world’s poor. UN-HABITAT has also been involved in post-conflict reconstruction in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Dr Tibaijuka will be available to speak to the media on the day of the convocation.

The three other honorary graduands being recognised by UCL are:

· Dr Timothy Hunt, principal scientist at Cancer Research UK, awarded the 2001 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine;
· Professor Daniel McFadden, American Nobel Prize-winning economist;
· Professor Dr Erwin Neher, the German biomedical scientist and Nobel Prize winner for his work on the nervous system.
