Lord Woolf, the Lord Chief Justice, to deliver Mishcon Lecture at UCL

Publication date: Mar 13, 2006 3:40:04 PM

The Lord Chief Justice, the Rt. Hon. Lord Woolf of Barnes, will consider whether the UK needs a new approach to penal policy in this year's UCL Mishcon lecture.

Journalists are invited to attend the lecture, 'Do we need a new approach to penal policy?', which will be delivered on Thursday 22 April 2004 .

The Mishcon lecture was established in 1990 in honour of Lord Mishcon to mark his 75th birthday and in recognition of his achievements and service in the fields of law, education, religion, government and politics. UCL has endeavoured to reflect Lord Mishcon's career and interests in the annual lecture series by challenging the dominant view across this spectrum of subjects and promote discussion on the social, economic, moral, legal and political issues surrounding them.

Previous topics have ranged from the role and office of the Lord Chancellor; freedom of conscience and religion as applied to abortion and euthanasia; populism and pluralism in the New Labour government's constitutional reform programme; the Blair style of leadership in comparison to previous Prime Ministers; and the advent of a new, human rights based, world order in International Law.

The Mishcon lecture will commence at 19.00 at University College London in the Cruciform Lecture Theatre 1. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance. To request a ticket or for further information please contact UCL Media Relations.

A full transcript of the lecture will be available in advance of the lecture at 17.00 on Thursday 22 April but is embargoed until delivery at 19.00. A copy can be accessed by clicking on the link below:
