WINNER: Sounds of UCL Competition
23 April 2013
Congratulations to Dr Kevin Drake who is joint
winner of the Sounds of UCL competition
Sounds of UCL’ competition, invited staff and students to capture ambient audio clips that reflect the life of UCL. The competition was designed not only to present the life of UCL from a different perspective, but also to engage people outside the UCL community in university activity in an innovative way.
'WAVES AT MIDNIGHT'
Dr Kevin Drake created an imaginative recording of lute playing next to the wave tank.
A regular wave of 0.75Hz frequency breaking on a sloping beach in the UCL Ocean Towing Tank, with Dr Kevin Drake on eight course renaissance lute, playing 'Mr Dowland's Midnight' by John Dowland (1563-1626).
One of my colleagues thought at first that I might have placed a pre-recorded lute track alongside the sound of breaking waves during multi-track editing. Please note that it was a live single track recording with me playing the lute beside the beach. Indeed, the repeated musical phrase at the ending was improvised on the basis of visual observation to synchronise the last chord with the last wave and then to follow through with a bass note.
