Network models of stochastic processes relating to DNA methylation and stem cell and cancer biology

Description:
Complex systems which can be modelled as networks are ubiquitous. Well-known examples include social and economic networks, as well as many examples in cell biology such as gene regulatory and protein signalling networks. Many cell biological processes are inherently stochastic and non-stationary, and this is the perspective from which we are developing novel statistical network models. These models are motivated by cell biological processes relating to DNA methylation and stem cell and cancer biology, and can be generalised to other systems.

My research area is the development of models and tools for the analysis of complex social systems, with applications to global security, conflict and terrorism. My research concerns the modelling and analysis of issues related to security and crime, using methods from complexity science. This involves the use of non-linear dynamics, both discrete and continuous, simulation methods, and network theory. Present areas of application include the spatio-temporal modelling of both residential burglary and large-scale public disorder.

I work on the ENFOLD-ing project at CASA, creating and analysing mathematical models of international trade and migration. My principal research interest is the mathematical foundations of agent-based models and other complex systems, analysing ways in which the behaviour of such models can be predicted and controlled and the extent to which it can be accurately represented by more tractable models.  I have also worked on spatial game theory and the mathematical modelling of the sterile insect technique to control mosquito populations.

Free-surface flows beneath an ice sheet

The research  is concerned with a study of linear and non-linear waves propagating in a fluid bounded above by a sheet of ice. Such waves can be generated by a load moving on the ice sheet. The research is motivated by applications to transport systems in cold regions, where bodies of water are transformed into roads and runways and where air-cushioned vehicles are used to break the ice.

Non-linear free boundary problems in a Hele-Shaw cell. 

Studying the evolution of the free boundary separating two immiscible fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell (thin gap between two parallel plates). Aiming to understand the generalised two fluid problem both numerically and analytically, using complex variable methods.

My research focuses mainly on how the presence of small, oscillating bumps on a surface could affect the surrounding boundary layer, with particular emphasis on the potential for this method to delay or suppress the separation of a laminar boundary layer at high Reynolds numbers.  This would be of interest in, for example, the design of aircraft as a means of preventing stall and reducing drag.
