Mathematics Bridging Course

Aims
The aim of this course is to bridge the gap between school and university mathematics and is intended for students about to start a degree in Mathematics (single or combined honours). This year all students entering Mathematics degree programmes at UCL will have at least A*AA at A-level, including Mathematics and Further Mathematics (or equivalent). So we expect you all to be pretty good at the type of calculational maths required at A-level.
Of course the study of calculus continues in your degree course and you will find the “Mathematical Methods” modules first a revision and then an extension of your A-level work. However, university mathematics differs considerably from A-level, both in the style of teaching and in the greater demands made on the student’s ability to:
(i) understand (and construct) quite complex logical arguments and formal definitions;
(ii) solve multi-stage problems;
(iii) deal with increasing levels of abstraction.

The course is open to all students applying to UCL who
are about to take a degree in Mathematics or a Mathematics-related subject. It is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow students and familiarise

Course Structure
The course will involve a series of lectures, but much
of the participants’ time will be spent working in groups, on problems
related to the lectured material, with help and advice available from
members of the Department.
Times
10.15am - 4.15pm each day
PLEASE NOTE: Thursday 22nd September will be a drop-in day only, with no lectures/problems classes.
Cost
The cost for all students is £100.00. Cheques, bank sterling drafts and postal orders should all be made payable to 'UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON'. Cash should NOT be sent through the post with application forms.

Accommodation
Accommodation is available at moderate cost
