Revealed: how bacteria drill into our cells and kill them

A team of scientists has revealed how certain harmful bacteria drill into our cells to kill them. Their study shows how bacterial ‘nanodrills’ assemble themselves on the outer surfaces of our cells, and includes the first movie of how they then punch holes in the cells’ outer membranes.

UCL and Japan strengthen links in big data science

The UK and Japan are forging new links in the field of big data. As part of this developing strategic partnership, a delegation of leading Japanese data scientists visited the UK last week. In their schedule of meetings with UK universities, government institutions and companies, they spent a day at UCL’s Big Data Institute, to discuss possible areas of future collaboration.

2014 "Gerhard Ertl" Lecture

Richard Catlow gave the 2014 "Gerhard Ertl" Lecture in Berlin on 10 December 2014. The lecture and award are named after the 2007 Nobel Laureate and are for contributions to Catalytic and Surface Science. The award is made annually by the three universities in Berlin and the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society.  The  theme of the lecture was the role of computer modelling as a tool in surface and catalytic science and highlighted work in these fields at UCL in recent years. The lecture and award ceremony were attended by Prof Ertl.

Professor Sofia Olhede elected a member of the International Statistical Institute

Professor Sofia Olhede has been elected a member of the International Statistical Institute at the 2014 Membership Elections following her services to the international workshop on the Future of Statistics. This meeting produced the International Year of Statistics Report (accessible via the below link).
