New Dean of Mathematical & Physical Sciences appointed

The faculty is delighted to announce the appointment of Prof Nick Brook as the new Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The appointment will be effective as of next academic year (2014-15).

Prof Brook is currently Head of the School of Physics at the University of Bristol. As a Particle Physicist he has worked at both the DESY laboratory in Hamburg and at CERN in Geneva. He was the computing project leader on the LHCb experiment during the vital period leading up to first data taking. He has sat on the management board of the world's largest computing grid, LCG. His research interest is in the area of Quantum Chromodynamics and he has sat on the Physics steering groups of both the ZEUS and LHCb experiments.

He said: "I am very excited about taking up the role of Dean of MAPS at UCL. There are fantastic opportunities within the Faculty. I am looking forward to rising to the challenges to ensure the Faculty continues to go from strength to strength."

He is a distinguished scientist and has an excellent track record of success in his current role as the Head of Physics in Bristol.  His vision for the future of the UCL MAPS faculty was outstanding and I am looking forward to working with him to deliver that vision."

Prof Brook will succeed Prof Richard Catlow, FRS, who having led the faculty since 2007 will be stepping down to devote more of his time to his research in materials chemistry and catalytic science.
