Transformation of Jewish Culture in Early Modern Europe
Course code: HEBRG141
Credits: 20.
The course considers the criteria for defining the early modern period as a unique epoch in the cultural and intellectual history of European Jewry. Through an investigation of several major themes -- all relatively new factors in the shaping of Jewish culture and society from roughly 1492 to 1750 -- it argues that this period can be meanifully demarcated as distinct from both earlier and later Jewish cultural experinces.
Course tutor: Dr François Guesnet, Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
Time and location: Tuesday, 4-6 p.m. in first term.
