The Rise of Romance, 1150-1230

This course is taught in the departments of French and German. It considers, by means of the comparative study of a group of major texts, the innovations which characterise the new European vernacular genre of romance, including thematic,stylistic and formal features. The texts will be selected from a list including works by Wace, Chrétien de Troyes, Beroul, Hartmann von Aue, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Gottfried von Strassburg and others. The texts selected for special study may vary from year to year.

A reading knowledge of French and/or German is desirable.


Assessment: 2 essays totalling 8,000 words.
