This course is taught in the departments of French and German. It considers, by means of the comparative study of a group of major texts, the innovations which characterise the new European vernacular genre of romance, including thematic,stylistic and formal features. The texts will be selected from a list including works by Wace, Chr├ętien de Troyes, Beroul, Hartmann von Aue, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Gottfried von Strassburg and others. The texts selected for special study may vary from year to year.

A reading knowledge of French and/or German is desirable.

Assessment: 1 essay of up to 6,000 words
