Neurofilament meeting at the Institute of Neurology

27th June 2013

Neurofilaments are structurally important proteins in the brain. Damage to the brain by either traumatic injury or disease can cause neurofilamentsto be released into CSF or blood, and measurement of these released proteins can help to diagnose or monitor neurological disease.

With this in mind experts in the field of the study of neurofilaments, (led by Dr Axel Petzold) were invited to a meeting here at the Institute of Neurology and an afternoon of presentations highlighting different disease processes and measurement challenges, resulted in discussions which will lead to collaborations and a unified strategy for the development of standardised assays which will enable neurofilaments to be used as an important biomarker for neurodegenerative disease.
