Professor Sir John Tooke, Vice-Provost (Health) at UCL, has today begun a five year term as President of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He takes over from Professor Sir John Bell who retired yesterday having led the Academy to significantly increased prominence and influence.

The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology is the recipient of a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, in recognition of “outstanding excellence”, it was announced today.

Professor Anthony Smith has been appointed UCL Vice-Provost (Education). Since 2006 Professor Smith has been Principal and Dean of the School of Pharmacy, which merges with UCL from 1 January 2012. He is a distinguished scientist, with special interests in pharmacy education; antibiotic therapy and resistance; biofilms and microbiology.

UCL and the London Borough of Newham have today announced plans to explore the establishment of a new campus for UCL in the Olympic borough of Newham, in addition to the University’s Bloomsbury location.

UCL has moved closer to reducing health inequality present in the UK after the launch of the new UCL Institute of Health Equity by Professor Sir Michael Marmot (UCL Epidemiology & Public Health) and Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

UCL has announced details of a new EPSRC Centre which will boost innovation in the manufacture of new medicines, improving cost-effectiveness and making the drugs more widely available. The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Emergent Macromolecular Therapies is being funded by a £4.9m grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), with a further £3.9m investment (cash & in-kind) provided by over 25 founding industry partners.

A new book, the result of a unique collaboration between UCL staff and students and London’s local communities, has just been published.

London has moved a step closer towards becoming a global leader in future cities research today after UCL, Imperial College London and Cisco entered into a three year initial agreement to create a Future Cities Centre in the capital.
