Welcome to the UCL Live webcasting FAQs.

If you are experiencing problems viewing or listening to the live webcast, or indeed would just like to know more about this facility, then please read the FAQs below.



  • Q. What is ‘Live Webcasting’?

Live webcasting or live streaming is essentially the live broadcasting of video and audio over the Internet in real-time, very much like a TV station or radio station would broadcast live programmes.

This allows events that are being filmed or recorded to simultaneously be streamed live to a web page. The resulting live broadcast can then be viewed or listened to via an embedded media player in the viewer's web browser.

  • Q. What do I need to view a live stream or webcast?

Web Browser, computer and internet connection

Web Browser: To view a live stream it is recommended that you have the most up to date version of your desired web browser installed e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome.

Computer: If you are using a computer, you need to check it can run the latest version of Flash, which Adobe provides a version of for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. You can download and install the latest version of Flash for your web browser here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer

Only the latest version of Flash will let you watch programmes in full screen.

Note: If you keep getting told to install Flash, existing versions need to be uninstalled before you reinstall it. Please follow the instructions at Adobe's site on how to remove Flash.

Connection: We recommend that you have an internet connection speed of at least 1 Mbps - broadband, cable or 3G if supported. To receive the 'High Quality' webcast you may need an even higher internet connection speed. Dial-up internet access will not provide a good enough connection. If you are experiencing poor playback, please see the advice given in the next FAQ.

Mobile Device and wireless connection

You can view the live webcasting of UCL Live on mobile devices if they either have a browser that is Adobe Flash enabled or HTML5 enabled e.g. Apple iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

Connection: To access the live webcast on these devices it is recommended that you have access to a good wireless internet connection e.g. such as eduroam.

  • Q. Why does a live broadcast sometimes keep stopping with a spinning circle, or not play smoothly?

If your network connection is not consistent, you may experience problems connecting. The live stream may then pause or a circle will spin on your screen.

Network traffic

Check that your connection is not being shared with others that may be downloading or uploading files. Network traffic may also build at certain times of day.

Security software, firewalls and routers

Some security programs such as anti-virus software, firewalls or routers may block your access to the live webcast. This may mean that you always see the loading screen, with a spinning circle in the middle of where the video should be. Please check your computer and/or network settings to ensure that it is not blocking Flash.

  • Q. What to do if I can not get the live broadcast to play?

Sometimes a live stream may temporarily stop playing. This could be down to network traffic or other connectivity issues. In such cases it is worth waiting a few minutes and then retry playing the live stream again by pressing the play button. If the live stream will still not play then please see the next FAQ on who you can contact for help.
