HCSCGS12: Developmental Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties (30 credits)

Course OutlineThis module introduces students to the range of developmental speech, language and communication impairments and their disabling consequences, methods of speech and language therapy assessment and intervention, and important multidisciplinary links. Alongside theoretical background and current research, practical and clinical aspects are considered and there are particularly clos e l inks with HCSCGS11 (Professional and Clinical Studies), HCSCGS13 (Psychological and Linguistic Perspectives on Development), HCSCGS14 (Phonetics and Phonology) and HCSCGS15 (Linguistics). This module also links with HCSCGS17 (Anatomy and Physiology of Speech, Language and Hearing), and with a number of Year B modules including HCSCGS22 (Management of Acquired Communication Difficulties) and HCSCGS23 (Disorder of Vocal Tract: Structure and Function).

Aims

  • To develop understanding of the range, nature and causes of developmental speech, language and communication difficulties
  • To consider the life-long effects of developmental speech, language and communication impairments through to adulthood and how these may be disabling.
  • To consider medical perspectives on developmental speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To consider educational perspectives on developmental speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To synthesize and apply the knowledge bases acquired in other modules to the study of speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To enable students to make appropriate differential diagnoses of clients' difficulties.
  • To demonstrate how intervention can be evaluated.

Learning Outcomes


Knowledge and Understanding:

By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • theoretical and applied research relevant to developmental speech, language and communication difficulties
  • the range of symptoms and conditions that arise in developmental speech, language and communication difficulties
  • the ways in which speech and language processing can be impaired
  • the ways in which a range of speech, language and communication difficulties can be assessed
  • a range of intervention approaches and techniques relevant to working with children or adults with development disorders of communication

Skills:

By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate that, for clients with developmental speech, language and communication difficulties, they can:

  • select appropriate assessment procedures
  • make and justify a differential diagnosis
  • develop an overall management plan
  • develop an appropriate intervention programme
  • evaluate an intervention programme
  • collaborate with other professionals in managing clients.


These outcomes will be achieved through:

  • an initial guided reading pack
  • teaching the syllabus outlined below
  • students' experiences during clinical placements (HCSCGS11) running concurrently
  • discussion of integration of theory and practice during seminars and workshops including use of students' own clinical examples
  • guidance and formative feedback from lecturers on non-assessed data analysis tasks
  • guidance and formative feedback from lecturers on assessed data analysis tasks.

Syllabus Content

Introduction to developmental speech, language and communication difficulties

The range of developmental difficulties; Differentiation of aspects of language, and delineation between speech and language; Process of assessment: assessment of speech; assessment of language; Introduction to AAC.

Environmental factors in speech / language difficulty

Medical perspectives and educational perspectives including speech and language therapy management.

Effects of pre- / peri-natal factors in development; Variability in language development; Affects of abuse and neglect; effects of multilingual home environment; Introduction to effects of otitis media; Role of language input; Parent-child interaction programmes; Language enrichment programmes.

Clients with learning disabilities

Medical perspectives and educational perspectives

Introduction to Genetics; Syndromes associated with learning disability.

Code of practice and statementing procedure; Special schools for children with learning disabilities; Philosophy of educational inclusion.

Speech & Language Therapy management including :

Introduction to client group; Diagnosis, speech, language and cognition; Principles of intervention, evaluation of programmes, and outcome measurement; Supporting functional communication.

Multidisciplinary team work

Working with clients in a school for children with learning disabilities; Working with adult clients with learning disabilities.

Social communication difficulties

Medical perspectives and educational perspectives

Differential diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorders; Emotional / behavioural difficulties in childhood; Range of Social Communication disorders; Cognitive deficits in autism; Primary and secondary pragmatic difficulties

Speech & Language Therapy management including:

Differential diagnosis; Assessment of pragmatic skills; Intervention; Evaluation of programmes; Outcome measurement.

Multidisciplinary team work

Working with autistic children in school settings.

Differential diagnosis of developmental hyperactivity and attention disorders.

Speech and Language Therapy Management including:

Coocurrence of hyperactivity and attention disorders with developmental speech, language and communication difficulties; Management of challenging behaviour in the SLT context.

Clients with congenital hearing impairment

Educational perspectives

Oral, sign and bilingual contexts in education of deaf children.

Revision of speech and language processing models (input);

Speech & Language Therapy management including:

Assessment of the speech of deaf people; Management of children with hearing loss; Adults with congenital hearing loss.

Overview of developmental speech, language & communication difficulties

Overview of developmental speech, language & communication difficulties; Complex case illustrations.

Teaching Method

This module will be taught through weekly lectures and seminars/workshops. A number of external lecturers (e.g. SLT specialist clinicians and other professionals) contribute to the teaching programme. Students will also be given an introductory reading pack, essential directed reading and associated data analysis activities.

Unseen written examination

Regulations for award of MSc SLS require the student to achieve a mark of 50 or above for each individual assessment component of this module. All students awarded MSc SLS are eligible to apply to the Health Professions Council for registration as a speech and language therapist
