FBS Open Day - 8th February 2012
Information about the MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition

The interdisciplinary MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition is aimed at applicants whose interest in language spans more than one discipline. Building on a first degree in linguistics, speech sciences, psychology, cognitive science, or a cognate discipline, students plan their own course of study (with the guidance of an advisor), selecting from a range of courses in several different UCL departments. The degree is a stand-alone 12-month Masters, but is also excellent preparation for PhD research in a language-related field of study.

Programme Director: Dr Jyrki Tuomainen
Teaching Administrator: Pete Buchanan

Structure of the Programme | More details

The degree has five main components:

  • M.F. Foundation Course,
  • M1: Research Methods,
  • M2 Theoretical Frameworks in Speech, Language and Cognition,
  • M3: Research Project and
  • M4: Research Plan.

Assessment
What current students say
The degree is largely assessed by coursework, with only the statistics component being assessed by exam. What I really liked about the course was the opportunity to choose study modules from across the whole University - this really allowed me to pursue my research interests and develop skills for the future.

What do people do with an MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition
Further Information
A large proportion of our students go on to study for a PhD and pursue a career in academia. The MRes is excellent preparation for a PhD degree and we have been very successful at getting candidates onto funded programmes. A number of graduates have returned to clinical practice as specialised speech and language therapists, or have gone on to work as researchers. Others go on to work in other fields ranging from business to education. The skills that the MRes develops - independent research, presentation skills, statistics - are very highly sought after outside academia.
