Information about the MSc Psychodynamic Developmental Neuroscience
This is a highly selective 2-year UCL international Masters programme, with the first year based at University College London and the second year based at Yale, New Haven in the USA. Typically 10 students are accepted each year. This a unique programme that equips students with an understanding of neuroscience research, a sound grasp of psychoanalytic theory and multiple perspectives on developmental disorders such as autism, depression, anxiety and conduct disorder. A substantial empirical research project completed by each student in the second year offers an opportunity to bring together diverse models and theories of development.

Structure of the Programme | More information

The programme is offered on a full-time basis only. It is a two year programme: one calendar year of full-time study and one academic year of full-time study

  • First year

The first year is based at the Anna Freud Centre in Hampstead, London. Teaching in the first year comprises 11 mandatory modules, grouped into four streams Neuroscience, Research Methods, Developmental Psychopathology and Psychoanalytic Concepts.  There is also a weekly journal club throughout the year and a variety of elective opportunities to attend research and clinically related seminars

  • Second year

The second year is based at Yale University in the Child Study Center, a department in the School of Medicine. Students will complete a developmental neuroscience course comprising three strands: Behavioural Genetics, Advanced Neuroimaging Methods and Clinical Applications of Neuroimaging. For the second year each student is assigned to a Yale Mentor, who is a senior research academic. Each student works with their mentor to devise and conduct a piece of independent research which is written up formally as a 15,000 word dissertation. Research projects span a wide range from imaging work (fMRI) to developmental studies of early attachment. Each student will also be paired with a psychoanalytic mentor from the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis. The Institute also provides students with a formative programme on contemporary psychoanalysis.

X Ray of the brain

I made the decision to undertake a degree in Psychodynamic Developmental Neuroscience because I wanted to be at the forefront of a new field that has the potential to link knowledge about the brain with our understanding of the mind. This first year in London also helped forged an awareness about the ways in which neuroscience and psychoanalysis can unite to form a special understanding of development. Being involved with a research lab at Yale during the second year has allowed me to apply my own ideas and create a unique research project. So far my decision has proved to be an extremely rewarding one, and I am confident it will continue to challenge me both intellectually and academically
