Simon Smith (Microbiology 1981)

Upon graduating in 1981 with a degree in Microbiology I joined the Civil Service - first as an Executive
Officer at the Agricultural Research Council, then at a higher grade with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF - now DEFRA) in London. Following this I pursued a teacher training course in Canterbury and returned to Cardiff where I fell into the wonderful world of information technology. Largely self-taught I have held several positions in this field ranging from teaching and training to web design and database administration both in this country and the USA.

In 1995 I took a break and decided to apply myself to Voluntary Service Overseas where I worked on irrigation projects in what must be one of the most fascinating countries - Mali. I now work for the Environment Agency national HQ in Bristol. Having learned several languages ranging from Spanish to Polish I am now branching out into Egyptian hieroglyphics and Assyrian cuneiform!
