Information About Scholarship Opportunities

We currently offer three scholarships within Biological Sciences:


Harold and Olga Fox Scholarship for Overseas Students

The Harold and Olga Fox Scholarship fund has been set up thanks to a recent bequest from the estate of Professor Harold Fox to Biological Sciences students. We award one Scholarship per year to overseas (full fee-paying) students applying for the BSc or MSci degree programmes in Biological Sciences. The Harold and Olga Fox Scholarships will pay £5000 towards overseas fees in each of the three or four years of the Scholar's course, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

To apply for one of these Scholarships you must hold an offer of admission to study towards one of our 3-year BSc, or 4-year MSci, degrees. (Course Code C900, C901 or C902 only)

To apply for one of the Scholarships please submit with your application:

  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Covering letter in your own handwriting explaining why you wish to study at UCL.
  • An essay in English (approximately 1000 words) on any biological subject of your choice (eg. The importance of Biology in the 21st century.)

Email entries are not permitted.

Entries will be awarded according to academic merit. The committee’s decision is final. The deadline for applications is 15th July (or the first working day following the 15th if the deadline falls on the weekend) for entry in September of the same year. The result will be announced in late August.

Harold Fox completed his PhD thesis, "Development of the skull and associated structures in Amphibia with special reference to the Urodela," in 1951, in the Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, under the supervision of Dr. Michael Abercrombie. Harold remained in the department for the rest of his working life until 1994.

We are offering three Scholarships to UK/EU undergraduate students joining the degree programme of Biological Sciences. The awards pay £1000 in each of the three or four years of the student's degree course, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

To apply for one of the Scholarships you must hold an offer of admission to study towards one of our 3-year BSc, or 4-year MSci, degrees.

To apply for one of these Scholarships please submit with your application:

  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Covering letter in your own handwriting explaining why you wish to study at UCL.
  • An essay in English (approximately 1000 words) on any biological subject of your choice (eg. The pros and cons of GM crops.)


Email entries are not permitted.

Entries will be judged by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of performance in the A-level examinations as well as the above documentation. The committee’s decision is final. The deadline for applications is 15th July (or the first working day following the 15th if the deadline falls on the weekend) for entry in September of the same year. The result will be announced in August after the A-level results.

Biological Sciences Alumnus Scholarship for UK Undergraduates

Thanks to a recent gift from a former student of Zoology, Biological Sciences will offer one Scholarship to UK undergraduate students joining the BSc degree programme of Biological Sciences.  The award pays £1000 in each of the three years of the student's degree course, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

To apply for one of the Scholarships you must hold an offer of admission to study towards one of our 3-year undergraduate BSc degrees.

How To Apply

To apply for the scholarship for September 2010 entry, students must submit:

  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Covering letter in their own handwriting explaining why they wish to study at UCL
  • An essay in English (up to 1000 words) on a biological subject of their choice


The closing date is the 15th of July 2010 (or the first working day following the 15th if the deadline falls on the weekend).

Email entries are not permitted. Entries will be judged by the Scholarship Committee, whose decision is final. The committee's decision will be based on performance in the A-level examinations as well as the above documents. The result will be announced in August after the A-level results.
