A A A

Sue Parkyn (Biology 1996)

I graduated from UCL in 1996 with a 1st class degree in Biology. The following year I studied for a teaching qualification at King's College London (secondary science PGCE). Since then I have worked in Inner London comprehensive schools as a Science teacher up to GCSE, also teaching Biology to A level.

At the moment science is a shortage subject in education so I was lucky enough to be able to choose where I worked. I loved studying biology at UCL and find it rewarding that I can carry on thinking about science as part of my job. The students at my school are challenging and it is essential to provide them with stimulating, interesting science lessons.

I have been in my present job as Head of Science for the last 18 months and, although it is hard work, the money and the holidays are pretty good.

I am still in touch with many friends who studied Biology with me at UCL and their careers range from banker in the City of London, making Horizon films at the BBC, medical research consultant and primary school teacher. I always look back at my time at UCL as perhaps the best period of my life so far; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
