Wendy Ng (Genetics 2002)

I very much enjoyed my time at UCL, both academically and socially. I had a pretty clear idea of the area of biology I wanted to be in - genetics. The degree structure, allowing progressive specialisation, enabled me to gain knowledge in other areas of biology which are important even for a geneticist - as I am beginning to find out in my PhD!

Currently, I am in the midst of a Human Genetics PhD at Oxford. My research looks into the molecular basis of RSV bronchiolitis, which predominantly affects infants. RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) infects all children by the age of two, but for certain individuals, an apparent over-enthusiastic response from the immune system causes severe inflammation of the lower respiratory tract.

The disease is known as a "complex disorder" whereby many factors - genetic and environmental - act together to cause deleterioius effects. I use DNA microarrays to examine RSV-specific immune response with the hope of identifying novel genes affecting the molecular pathways of the disease, so that we may be able to offer better treatment or prevention.
