Richard Coombes (Biology 2000)

Studying Biology at UCL is a decision I'll never regret. The university and the department are fantastic. Add to this the experience of living and working in such a great city, with all the social possibilities it generates, and you have an unbeatable combination.

I never intended a career in academia, but I wanted to pursue my fascination with biology to degree level.  UCL is excellent in terms of the breadth of areas that can be studied; however once you find your niche you can specialize as much as you wish.  I started as a general biologist but soon developed a strong interest in molecular biology and bioinformatics, with a bit of Immunology thrown in for good measure.  The academic staff are truly inspirational too - you only have to attend one of the world-renowned Steve Jones' lectures to be hooked on Genetics for good!

So where did a Biology degree from UCL take me?  I'm currently a Senior Consultant with AEA Technology Plc, working together with the NHS to monitor clinical outcomes of hip and knee replacement surgery.  Although this may seem far removed from biology, in fact it is not - the career path to that led me to where I am today has always been driven by my biological interests and knowledge, along with my expertise in IT.  My current work simply develops my biological interests in a useful, commercially important direction.

If you want a great degree that will really take you places, whether academia or further afield, look no further than Biology at UCL !
