Why Choose Environmental Biology?

The environment faces increasing pressure from our demands for natural resources and from human population growth. This is set against a background of global climate change that is partly of our own making and which may have major consequences for future planning. Environmental Biologists study the functioning of organisms, populations and communities and the environments in which they live. Our programme also focuses on the special problems faced in urban environments where the growth of cities and their need for resources are a major feature of the contemporary world. With a degree in Environmental Biology you will have a strong background to take part in informed debate on the environment with government agencies, industry, urban planners and wider partners concerned about the future.

What is the course structure like?

First Year
An introduction to the principles of your subject through Biological Sciences and the Geography Department. Through lectures, tutorials and laboratory and field work everybody is brought up to the same level of knowledge. This year is relaxed, easing you into student life!

Second Year
The core courses which you must take are Biology-oriented but as you have the freedom to choose course options you can balance these with modules from Geography and other Departments. From learning about animal anatomy to becoming aquainted with the principles of environmental management; you can tailor this Degree to meet your exact needs!

Third/Final Year
There is a wide array of exciting courses to choose from. If you are taking the BSc you can choose either a research or a literature project as well as traditional lecture based courses.

Fourth Year (MSci)
The fourth year will largely centre on a supervised research project and you will also take advanced level courses.
