Why Choose Biological Sciences? - student review

Biology is fascinating, it covers such a huge variety of organisms, and uncovers the secrets behind the millions of intricate processes that take place in our world day to day. It is a subject that will never be fully understood as it continues to grow and develop. Therefore, there is always more knowledge to be found and discovered.

I am studying Biology because I am a person who loves a challenge. Doing Biology brings great rewards and satisfaction, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. I really enjoy my studies especially because we are given the option to specialize as the years progress. I am so happy now that I am able to concentrate on my field of interest: Cellular and Molecular biology!

What is the course structure like?

First Year
An introduction to the principles of your subject. Through lectures, tutorials and laboratory work everybody is bought up to the same level of knowledge. This year is relaxed, easing you into student life!

Second Year
The Biological Sciences second year allows you to choose from three streams to suit your emerging interests: Generalist, Whole Organism or Cells.

Third/Final Year
In your third/final year you have the choice to take modules from many different subjects from across UCL. If you are taking the BSc you can choose either a research or a literature project as well as traditional lecture based courses. The range of options is very wide - you can study courses which follow on from those which you know you have enjoyed or you can try your hands at something completely new.

Fourth Year (MSci)
The fourth year will largely centre on a supervised research project and you will also take advanced Master’s level courses.
