Ever since I can remember biology has fascinated me. There was no competition
when it came to choosing what degree to do. I had the best time at UCL – and it
would be hard not to. What a city, what a university! My undergraduate degree at UCL prepared with me with both the knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in scientific research. In the second year I was fortunate enough to do a summer research project with Jerry Hyams. This was an excellent opportunity to get my hands wet and see if bench science and I would get on. This experience solidified my desire to wear a lab coat, and I stayed on at UCL to do a Ph.D. with Jonathan Nugent. Having spent six years at UCL, I left behind a lot of friends and fond memories. To this day I still pester my mentors for advice! The thing I like most about what I do now is that no day is ever the same. Science is such a fast moving and dynamic area to work in, so there is always something new to learn, to find out and to understand. Apart from thoroughly enjoying my job, I really like to think that one day the work that we do will make a difference, however small, to someone. Current position (since March 2002): Postdoctoral Research Scientist, MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, London. I now work in Chris Higgins' lab where we hope to develop a novel delivery system for use in gene therapy. 1998-2001: PhD Studentship at UCL. I worked with Jonathan Nugent on small polypeptides of Photosystem II. 1995-1998: BSc (Biology), UCL. |
