|Module prerequisites:||Background in molecular cell biology and genetics. For students on modular degree programmes BIOL1005 (Introduction to Genetics) AND BIOC1001/8/9 (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) OR CELL1001 (Biochemistry/Cells and Development) OR BIOL2004 (Fundamentals of Molecular Biology). MBBS years 1&2.|
|Module outline:||An introduction to the modern science of development covering a variety of organisms and discussing evolutionary, cellular and genetic bases of animal development. Specific topics covered include development of the embryonic axes in insect and vertebrate models; the role of homeodomain proteins and other developmental regulators in setting up the body plan; the development of the vertebrate limb and the nervous system; evolutionary development and the biological basis of ageing.|
|Module aims:||To give students an introduction to modern developmental biology covering a variety of organisms and discussing the evolutionary, cellular and genetic bases of animal development.|
|Module objectives:||After taking this course students should be able to describe the process and underlying mechanisms of development from fertilisation to adulthood in a number of model systems including, echinoderms, insects, and vertebrates. They should understand various approaches to studying development (comparative/descriptive, experimental embryology and genetic) and ugenral concepts including cell fate, positional information and axes determinating. They should also be able to discuss gene regulation/regulatory networks and their role in development, cellular differentiation and ageing.|
|Key skills provided by module:||Peer reviewing and writing essays. Critical analysis of the scientific literature. Microscopy and observation of early development. Interpretation of gene expression patterns.|
