|Module prerequisites:||Students wishing to take this module are strongly encouraged to have: EITHER (1) a strong molecular biology/biochemistry background background OR (2) a 2.1 or higher average in Year 2 AND must have taken and achieved a 2.1 or higher in a cell biology-related course or in genetic systems. This module cannot accommodate more than 60 students. Should the module size exceed 60, the criteria outlined above will become mandatory for confirmation of enrolment on BIOC3014.|
|Module aims:||To provide an appreciation of current scientific research in regulatory molecular networks through genetic engineering in cell-based and animal models. The course will concentrate on (a) covering the latest advances on the regulation of gene expression (b) exploring diverse experimental models for better understanding the function of individual proteins and signaling networks.|
|Module objectives:||Objectives: The objectives are to extend this understanding to the point where the students : • To convey a broad vision of the contributions of molecular biology to our knowledge of the functioning of diverse organisms from bacteria to man. • To show how molecular biology, when used in conjunction with other biological disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, genetics), is revealing the mechanisms of complex regulatory protein networks in the control of diverse cellular functions in health and disease. • To teach critical analysis of original experimental design and execution, as would be used at the present time by a world-class research laboratory. • Can comprehend the experimental approaches and ideas presented in original scientific papers and reviews. • Can critically analyze, appreciate and interpret such scientific data and ideas.|
