Module outline:
Module aims:1. To allow the student to begin to develop research skills which include:- the principles of experimental design and the use of appropriate modern experimental techniques; the expertise to read into the background literature of a specific problem; the ability to analyse data and to critically evaluate the findings; the skills to present experimental findings in a competent written report which interprets them against the appropriate background knowledge; the technique to present a piece of work both orally and in poster format. 2. To engender in final year students some appreciation of the experimental basis of biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular medicine and biochemical engineering by being part of an active research laboratory. A subsidiary aim is to help the student to revise standard laboratory calculations learnt in earlier courses.
Module objectives: to provide the student with a choice of projects embodying limited experimental or investigative aims in a range of fields within biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular medicine and biotechnology; to make the projects available in active research laboratories headed by leading scientists with direct experience of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular medicine and biotechnology; to provide training in techniques relevant to the project; to provide advice on the format and style of a written dissertation; to provide formal training on how to present research findings on overheads/slides and on how to structure and present a poster. Oral presentations will be assessed (6.6% total project mark); revise and develop numeracy skills through the provision of sheets of standard calculations at the beginning of term with solution sheets followed by a tutorial session. Conduct a practice exam mid-October and a marked exam (6.6% total project mark) in mid-November.
