Module outline:This module provides an introduction to the acoustics of speech production, acoustical analysis of speech, speech perception, and experimental techniques to examine speech perception. The course is taught by a one-hour lecture each week, followed by a 1.5 hour laboratory (7 weeks) or tutorial session (3 weeks). 
Module aims:To give an introduction to the scientific study of speech production and perception. 
Module objectives:By the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: the fundamental elements of the scientific analysis of speech; the role of the "speech chain" in linguistic communication; and the major research results, theoretical perspectives and current controversies in speech perception and production.
