Module prerequisites:Introductory-level syntax classes. 
Module outline:This course provides a mid-level introduction to generative grammar, with a special emphasis on theories that regulate word order. These include proposals that restrict syntactic combination (such as X-bar theory, antisymmetry, and so on), theories that regulate the distribution of arguments (case and theta-theory) and theories that regulate the distribution of adverbials (such as the hierarchies that determine the relative order of adverbials). 
Module aims:The aims of the course are: - To familiarize students with theories in Generative Grammar that regulate word order. - To train students in reading and summarizing primary literature. - To train students in evaluating theoretical proposals.  
Module objectives:Intended learning outcomes: - Knowledge of theories that regulate word order. - Ability to read, understand and evaluate primary literature in this area.
