Module prerequisites:Basic knowledge of phonetic principles and some familiarity with the IPA notation. 
Module outline:To develop practical phonetic skills of speech sound perception, production and representation, with the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a tool. 
Module aims:This module aims to give students an introduction to the analysis and description of speech sounds, using the IPA as the basis for the representation and production of a wide range of speech sounds, nonsense words and tones. There will also be a focus on the discrimination and representation of the sounds of Received Pronunciation (RP), a reference accent of British English. 
Module objectives:- training in auditory discrimination of sounds and prosodic patterns, including English and non-English material
- gaining conscious control of speech production abilities and developing an awareness of the possibilities of the human vocal tract
- symbolic representation (transcription) of a wide range of speech sounds, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and showing a degree of phonetic detail relevant to the task
- potential application of these skills to linguistic analysis  
Key skills provided by module:- Familiarity with and understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet
- Transcription of English and non-English material with appropriate degree of phonetic detail
- Ability to produce English and non-English segmental and suprasegmental patterns in a variety of contexts; isolated syllables, phrases.
