Module aims:The course aims to engage students in the debate about whether human language and the communication systems of other species are different in kind or just in degree. Is the faculty of language found only in humans? The first-year has given you a reasonable understanding of the complexities of human language, and the course will compare other species' systems to those of humans. You will also learn how to be sceptical of the more extreme claims of both sides in this active debate.
