| Module prerequisites: | Basic knowledge of phonetic principles and some familiarity with the IPA notation. |
| Module outline: | To develop practical phonetic skills of speech sound perception, production and representation, with the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a tool. |
| Module aims: | This module aims to give students an introduction to the analysis and description of speech sounds, using the IPA as the basis for the representation and production of a wide range of speech sounds, nonsense words and tones. There will also be a focus on the discrimination and representation of the sounds of Received Pronunciation (RP), a reference accent of British English |
| Module objectives: | - training in auditory discrimination of sounds and prosodic patterns, including English and non-English material - gaining conscious control of speech production abilities and developing an awareness of the possibilities of the human vocal tract - symbolic representation (transcription) of a wide range of speech sounds, using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and showing a degree of phonetic detail relevant to the task - potential application of these skills to linguistic analysis |
