|Module prerequisites:||No formal prerequisites but a good grounding in Biochemistry and Cell Biology are recommended (for example PHOL2007).|
|Module outline:||All cell processes are regulated by signalling pathways. The correct regulation of cell processes is critical for the development and homeostasis of animals whereas dysregulation of these processes results in diseases as diverse as diabetes, schizophrenia and cancer. Taking advantage of the outstandingresearch environment atUCL, this course will consist of a series of lectures and associated journal clubs presented by research scientists of international renown.. The lecturers will discuss the signalling pathways that regulate distinct cell processes such as such as proliferation, cell:cell communication, motility, differentiation, fertilisation and cell death. Each researcher will focus on their own research strengths to present an overview of the field, followed by a presentation of work from their own laboratory. The associated journal club will discuss a recent innovative piece of work related to the research area.|
|Module aims:||To provide students with a broad understanding of the topics that constitute the 'core' areas of cell signalling in key cell biological processes. To introduce students to the questions being addressed in 'cutting edge' research laboratories and the techniques being used to address these questions. To teach students how to read and analyse primary research papers, including the ability to critically assess hypotheses, data and conclusions. To provide the students with the skills required to present scientific data in a clear and comprehensible fashion|
|Module objectives:||On completion of this course the students will be well equipped to pursue a career in Cell Signalling, Cell Biology, or any related area.|
|Key skills provided by module:||Academic skills: critical thinking, collation, analysis and presentation of primary research material in essay form and orally. Communication skills: contributing to discussions in journal clubs and presentation of a research paper. Peer assessment: feedback on student presentations.|
