Module prerequisites: 
Module outline: The course builds upon your primary knowledge of the heart and circulation. Essential aspects of cardiac and vascular physiology will be considered. This will enable you to grasp a number of areas of experimental, applied and patho-physiology.  
Module aims: to: - provide contemporary views on cardiac and vascular function; - relate this knowledge to the human subject; - link the treatment of cardiovascular disease to basic mechanisms; - help you develop independent study skills and teamwork; - facilitate the development of your written and oral communication skills.  
Module objectives: To: - cover a range of heart and vascular physiology at a level beyond that found in standard text books; - develop your understanding of cardiac and vascular function in relation to cellular mechanisms; - apply the above to understand the pathology of various cardiovascular diseases.  
Key skills provided by module:-analysis and integration of information gathered from a range of sources -critical evaluation and interpretation of evidence -construction of arguments and formulation of hypotheses -development of creativity and independence of mind -manage time, prioritise work, meet deadlines -communicate ideas and information effectively -work in cooperation with others -work independently and take on responsibility for personal learning and development

Module assessment:Essay 12.50%.
Unseen three-hour written examination 75.00%.
Poster presentation 12.50%.
 
Notes: THIS MODULE WILL RUN IN TERM 1, BLOCKS A & H The unseen three hour examination will consist of two parts: Section A) Write an abstract for an unseen research paper and write brief critique; Sections B, Essays) Write an essay style answer to two of five questions.
