Module outline:Module overview: The module deals with (1) language disorders in aphasic patients of different diagnostic category. Particular emphasis is placed on the language production and comprehension deficits of Broca's aphasic patients. (2) The organisation of the semantic system is explored via the study of the dementias, particularly of semantic dementia.  
Module aims:Preliminary outline of lectures: 1.Historical perspectives - the discoveries of Broca and Wernicke, the Wernicke-Lichtheim model. The Boston School and the debate about single case studies vs. the syndrome approach 2. Broca's aphasia: different explanations 3. Speech production deficits in Broca's aphasia 4. Grammatical morphemes deficits: the tree pruning hypothesis and its critiques 5. Syntactic comprehension deficits in agrammatic Broca's aphasia: the trace deletion hypothesis 6. More about tree pruning and trace deletion 7. Minimality effects in agrammatism 8. Slow syntax and other processing accounts of agrammatic speech and comprehension 9. Introduction to dementia 10. Semantic dementia: characteristics and theories
