| Module outline: | The module consists of two parts. The first is a series of seven, hour long lectures which cover the basic principles of pharmacogenetics. In the remaining 8-9 teaching slots, students will each be allocated a disease or disease area (allocation at the commencement of the course) and will be asked to prepare a presentation giving background about the disease, a review of the various medications being used to treat the disease, a review of the current evidence for genetic differences determining response to medication and risk of adverse drug responses and a proposal for future research activities. |
| Module aims: | The module aims to teach students about the current state of pharmacogenetic research, with an emphasis on translating research findings into clinical benefit. |
| Module objectives: | The student will gain experience in the following areas : Overview of nomenclature used for genetic variants influencing drug metabolism; Evaluation of predictive genetic tests using sensitivity, specificity, predictive accuracy; Critical appraisal of study designs in pharmacogenetics; Evaluation of pharmacogenetic studies within clinical trials, tests of treatment effect in marker positive individuals and influence on marker status in treated individuals; Methods for summarizing information from multiple pharmacogenetic studies (meta-analysis); Critical review of published pharmacogenetics data, public presentation of summary data and insight into research possibilities. |
