Module outline:The course will be divided into two major parts: 1) an initial part where key concepts of gene regulation and essential molecular biology and genomic approaches will be taught via lectures and practicals 2) a second part where specific topics will be addressed and case studies analyzed via interactive seminars complemented with activities (tutorials, problem based learning, workshops), in which the students will be learning critical analysis of data and how to use genomic databases and bio-computational tools.  
Module aims:To give students an advanced understanding of current scientific research in molecular biology. This course will focus on the contribution of molecular biology and genomics to our knowledge of gene regulation in diverse organisms and during evolution. To teach critical analysis of original experimental data, thus providing the intellectual framework for students to be able to discuss the design of experiments and to justify any conclusions that can be drawn.  
Module objectives:Topics covered in the initial part of the module will include: REGULATORY ELEMENTS AND TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS structure and function DNA-PROTEIN AND PROTEIN-PROTEIN INTERACTIONS single gene and genome-wide techniques for identification. STUDYING GENE REGULATION IN VIVO transgenics. POST-TRANSCRIPTIONAL CONTROL OF GENE EXPRESSION processing of RNA and mRNA stability; alternative splicing, microRNA and other types of non-coding regulatory RNA. GENOMIC APPROACHES TO STUDYING GENE EXPRESSION AND REGULATION microarrays, ChIP, RNAseq and more. The second part of the module will focus on the evolution of gene regulation: gene regulatory networks: structure, experimental approaches, modularity and visual representation.
