Module outline:Gene expression in bacteria: integrated control networks, two component signal transduction systems. Transcriptional regulation in higher organisms and molecular techniques for studying gene function: the pre-inititaion complex, signals that activate transcription factors, DNA cloning and complementation teachniques for identifying DNA-protein and protein-protein interactions; chromtin structure and gene expression; studying gene regulation and function in vivo. Post transcriptional and translational control of gene expression: RNA splicing, RNA editing and mRNA stbaility; examples of alternative splicing. Protein synthesis - mechanisms and regulation of translation.  
Module aims:To convey a broad vision of the contribution of molecular biology to our knowledge of gene regulation in diverse organisms. To show how molecular biology, when used in conjunction with other biological disciplines (e.g. biochemistry cell biology, genetics) is steadily revealing the mechanisms of previously intractable problems (e.g. control of gene expression). To teach critical analysis of original experiemntal data, thus providing the intellectual framework for students to be able to discuss the design of experiments and to justify any conclusions that can be drawn.  
Module objectives:To extend the knowledge and understanding of molecular biology to the point where the students: Have learned up-to-date principles of experimental design. Can comprehend the experimental approaches and ideas presented in original scientific papers and reviews. Have acquired the study skills for life-long reading of the molecular biological literature and for keeping abreast of developments in the most topical areas of biology. Have learned to critically analyse, appreciate and interpret scientific data and ideas.
