Module prerequisites:Only available to Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Molecular Biology BSc students. Prerequisites: BIOC1007, BIOC2004 and BIOC2005 As with the lab-based project, it is a requirement that students have a mark of at least 55% at the end of the second year. This module cannot accommodate more than 30 students. Should the module size exceed 30, the Year 2 average mark together with a short half page essay will be used as the main selection criteria for enrolment on the module.  
Module outline:This is a new 0.5 unit module being offered for the first time in 2011. It is intended that the majority of students will take this half unit together with the literature project. The half unit will consist of a series of lectures and seminars covering: - Communicating science - understanding how science is published and made accessible to the public - Intellectual property - patenting your inventions - The links between industry and acadaemia in bioscience - Costing and funding a project - Understanding research seminars - Selling yourself and your skills in the job market  
Module aims:Aims - To understand the role of a degree in biosciences outside a career in academic science - To understanding how science is communicated to the public, both through written media and through radio and television - To understand the importance of intellectual property and IP law, how inventions can be patented and how patents can be contended in court - To appreciate the links between industry and acadaemia in bioscience - To understand how a project is costed and funded - To develop skills in listening to and understanding research seminars with the ability to communicate their content in a simple manner - To learn how to sell yourself and your skills in the job market  
Module objectives:Objectives You will be able to: - Read a patent, identify the Claims of the patent and explain what it is describing - Examine a patent and identify biologically contentious issues - Write short descriptive text that summarizes scientific discoveries (from the literature) for non -specialist audiences, whether those be other scientists or the general public - Listen to research seminars, critique the presentation and identify the key points being made and summarize them - Take a scientific concept and design a project based around that idea which can be communicated to as funding body - Put together scientific concepts and sell them, together with your skills, as a pitch for funding a small company  
Key skills provided by module:With speakers from industry, science funding agencies, publishing, patent law, among others, the course will provide you with key transferable skills, preparing you to go into the job market. This course will clearly show that the strong science background provided by a science degree is of exceptional value in a wide arena and can open up a diverse range of opportunities beyond the obvious research avenues. These bioscience-related industries include, among others, publishing houses (e.g. Science AAAS), the pharmaceutical sector, patent law firms, funding bodies such as The Wellcome Trust, as well as the BBC. They are all part of billion dollar industries requiring enthusiastic science graduates with a good understanding of the wider role of science.
