| Module outline: | This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of speech sciences in order to gain a better understanding of the process of spoken communication. The module will cover basic concepts in articulatory phonetics, speech acoustics and speech perception. Students will learn mainly about research methods and instrumentation in these fields and will apply their knowledge to the description and investigation of normal speaker-listeners and those with hearing impairment. |
| Module aims: | This module aims to: 1. give an introduction to articulatory phonetics on the basis of the phonetic classification of speech sounds (vowels & consonants). 2. give an understanding of basic speech acoustics and of the acoustic description of speech sounds. 3. give an understanding of the processes involved in speech perception for populations of children and adults with normal and impaired hearing. 4. provide information about current speech and hearing research technology. |
| Module objectives: | At the end of the module, students should be able to understand: 1. the main research areas in speech sciences 2. the main instruments and techniques for experimental research in these areas. 3. the classification of vowels and consonants on an articulatory and an acoustic level. 4. the main acoustic cues needed to identify vowels and consonants. 5. about the development of speech perception |
