Module prerequisites: Preclinical neurobiology, or PHOL2005*, or BIOL2010, or ANAT2008, or ANAT2010. *Students with only PHOL2005 might be considered only after consultation with the module organizer.  
Module outline: This module comprises a survey of selected topics of current interest and importance in developmental neurobiology and in the repair of neural structures. Particular emphasis is placed on cellular and molecular aspects of these topics. Numerous lecturers both from UCL and other Institutions contribute to the course. Detailed composition varies from year to year but topics likely to be covered are: neural induction and patterning; neurogenesis; generation of cell diversity; cell-cell interactions; neuronal growth factors; programmed cell death; axon guidance and synaptogenesis; neuronal migration; development of excitability; neuron-glia interactions; myelination; stem cells and injury and repair in central and peripheral nervous systems.  
Module aims:The broad aims of the course are: * To provide a detailed description of selected key processes involved in neural development, function and repair and the molecular mechanisms underlying them. * To develop a critical awareness of the experimental evidence that has contributed to current understanding of those aspects of neural development, function and repair covered in the lecture programme. * To stress the importance of the ability to synthesis information obtained from different components of the course. * To provide a solid grounding for future specialised study of nervous system development, function and repair.  
Module objectives: Each lecture session is intended to provide an overview of the topic in hand and introduce students to key experimental evidence that has led to current understanding of underlying developmental mechanisms. Students will be expected to expand on this background knowledge by carrying out additional reading guided by reading lists provided by individual lecturers and the course organisers. They should also show initiative in researching their own reading material through use of the library and internet. Both the student-led discussions and the essay will promote these activities. We strongly encourage questions and discussion during the lecture sessions and mid-session break.
