Oral Cancer: An Update for General Dental Practice

Overview

Rates of oral cancer are increasing and it's presenting in people beyond those traditionally considered at-risk. 

This one-hour online course, presented by Professor Stephen Porter, will help you understand aspects of oral cancer and related disease relevant to the primary oral healthcare setting.

This course aims to detail:

  • clinical presentations of oral cancer and related disease
  • aspects of the epidemiology of oral cancer
  • potentially malignant oral disease
  • risk factors of oral cancer and potentially malignant disease
  • diagnostic and management measures for oral cancer in the primary healthcare setting
  • communicating with a patient with potentially malignant oral disease
  • referral considerations 

This course meets the General Dental Council's Development Outcome C: maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice.

The course is run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London.

    Who this course is for

    This course is relevant for all dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, and dental nurses, both in the United Kingdom and internationally.

    Structure and teaching

    This is a one-hour online course.

    It's made up of six sections:

    • epidemiology - some facts
    • clinical features
    • potentially malignant disease
    • risk factors
    • viral causes
    • diagnosis

    Each section includes a 6 to 12 minute video and a short quiz.

    At the end of the course, you'll need to fill in the feedback form in order to claim your CPD certificate.

    Once you've paid, you'll have access to the course for 5 years.

    CPD points and certificate

    You'll earn 1 hour verifiable CPD and a certificate of participation.

    The standard price is £50.

    Professor Stephen Porter

    Professor Stephen Porter

    Stephen has been the director of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute since 2008. He established the MSc in Oral Medicine, the MSc in Special Needs Dentistry and the Certificate and Diploma in Special Care Dentistry. He's the Programme Director for Special Needs and Special Care Dentistry and Chairman of the Teaching Division of Maxillofacial Surgical and Medical Sciences.

    Stephen's main research interests are the oral and dental implications of infection immunity, in particular the impact of human herpesvirus 8 and HIV on the mouth. His main clinical interests are the management of immunologically-mediated oral mucosal and salivary gland disease, particularly the use of novel immunosuppressive regimes.
