Overview
This one-day hands-on workshop provides an introduction to economic evaluation for those working on the frontline in the NHS and local government.
It's aimed at healthcare and public health staff who have limited experience of conducting economic evaluations and decision-making analysis.
You'll learn how to:
- undertake your own simple economic evaluation of a local intervention or service
- appraise other evaluations

This course is organised by NIHR ARC North Thames Academy. ARCs are partnerships between universities, health and other organisations which have come together to conduct ground-breaking research that will have a direct impact on the health of patients and the public.
Course content and structure
The course will involve a mixture of lectures and small group exercises to make sure the course is as practical and relevant as possible.
It will cover:
- the basic principles of economic evaluation methods
- how to assess the costs of an intervention/service
- how to measure and value outcomes of an intervention/service
- practical examples of economic evaluation analysis
- how to use of economic evaluation in decision making
You'll also have the opportunity to discuss the economic evaluation you're doing, or thinking of doing, in small groups.
A facilitator will help you scope your economic evaluation, draft its core elements, identify the data you'll need to use, and think about how you could overcome information or data gaps.
Who this course is for
The workshop is aimed at those who work in:
- NHS trusts
- clinical commissioning groups (CCGs)
- local authorities
It's not aimed at academics or researchers.
You don't need any previous knowledge of economics, or experience of study design and statistics. However, an interest in economics and being comfortable with numbers is desirable.
Eligibility
You should be carrying out, or will soon need to carry out, an economic evaluation of a service/intervention.
Priority will be given to those who provide a detailed description of such projects in their application.
Groups of people working on the same project are encouraged to apply.
Certificate of attendance
You'll receive a certificate of attendance on completing the course.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you'll be able to:
- undertake a simple economic evaluation of a local intervention or service
- critically appraise other economic evaluations
Course team
Dr Elena Pizzo
Elena is a Senior Health Economist at the Department of Applied Health Research at UCL. Her main research area includes economic evaluation of healthcare technologies and interventions, clinical decision analysis and, more generally, costing and measurement of health and distributional aspects of health policy. She has expertise in health economic evaluation of complex interventions, particularly those in primary care, prevention, dementia and maternity care.
Paula Lorgelly
Paula is a Professor of Health Economics in the Department of Applied Health Research at University College London. She leads the Health Economics theme in UCL's Populations and Lifelong Health Research Domain and is the leader of the Health Economics and Data Theme in the NIHR North Thames ARC. Much of her clinical research has focused on oncology, particularly genomics and precision medicine. Her current research focuses on outcomes, comparing different HRQoL instruments, eliciting patient preferences and the use of outcomes in outcome-based payment or incentive schemes.
