Icelandic Evening Language Classes (All Levels)

  • 2 hours per week
  • 10 weeks

Overview - Icelandic (all levels)

These ten-week online evening courses are open to everyone and will help you to communicate effectively in Icelandic.

You'll learn Icelandic as it's spoken in everyday situations and develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Two-hour classes are held once a week on weekday evenings from 5pm or 7pm, depending on the class/level.

Courses are taught at various levels, from complete beginner to proficiency. You can start at any level (if you meet the entry requirements) and you'll be able to progress to the next level after ten weeks.

These courses are run by the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE).

What you'll learn (by level)

Levels 1 & 1+ - Beginners Icelandic

These courses will help you function at a basic everyday survival level, introducing you to basic vocabulary and grammar.

They will cover:

  • an introduction to basic spoken Icelandic with emphasis on mastering the specific sounds of the language
  • developing practical listening skills
  • reading simple texts in Icelandic
  • using a dictionary and understanding grammatical abbreviations
  • getting to grips with several grammatical issues

On completing both levels you'll be able to communicate in and understand Icelandic on a number of practical everyday matters.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.

Levels 2 & 2+ - Lower Intermediate Icelandic

These courses will give you the opportunity to revise your existing skills and acquire more sophisticated ways of dealing with practical matters.

You'll practise the Icelandic declension system for nouns and move on to learning about the declension of adjectives, studying texts that will help you understand the declension pattern in action.

On completing both levels you'll be able to communicate in and understand Icelandic on many practical everyday matters relating to various aspects of culture.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.

Levels 3 & 3+ - Upper Intermediate Icelandic

These courses will help you develop all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to an intermediate level.

You'll continue to work on declension, with the aim of it becoming second nature.

You'll further develop your cultural awareness, your language learning skills and your ability to approach authentic material.

On completing these two levels, you'll be able to converse reasonably fluently with native speakers and discuss personal, social and current issues using appropriate structures.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.

Levels 4 & 4+ - Advanced Icelandic

These courses will help those with a good knowledge of Icelandic to become more fluent in the language.

Grammar will still be a main focus of the courses - you should have a good understanding of declension patterns by this stage, and you'll start to learn about verbs in the past.

Your cultural awareness will be further developed and and more complex texts will be introduced.

On completing these two levels you'll be able to understand and take part in various conversations with native speakers, using more complex and linguistically accurate structures.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.

Levels 5 & 5+ - Post Advanced Icelandic

These courses are designed to help advanced-level students to become more fluent in the language.

You'll:

  • improve your command of topic-related vocabulary and ability to vary your style according to the situation
  • practise your linguistic skills through a variety of activities (debates, games, oral comprehension etc.)
  • be encouraged to start reading texts on your own, watch films and television programmes in Icelandic and communicate in Icelandic outside the classroom whenever possible
  • read/listen to and discuss articles from newspapers and magazines and material from Icelandic television
  • further develop your cultural awareness, your language learning skills and your ability to approach authentic material

On completing these two levels you'll be able to use your language skills in a wide variety of situations, and use all forms of the language in a professional environment.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.

Proficiency - Icelandic

This course is designed for very advanced-level students who want to improve their fluency in Icelandic.

You'll practise your linguistic skills through a variety of activities, using authentic materials for reading, listening and discussion.

You'll be encouraged to read texts on your own, watch films and television programmes in Icelandic and communicate in Icelandic outside the classroom whenever possible.

You'll learn more about Icelandic culture, current affairs, history and recent changes in Icelandic society.

On completing this course you'll be able to use your language skills in social and professional environments.

Detailed course content can be found on the CLIE website.
