Rare Arts Periodicals

Over 160 of the Library's older and rarer arts and humanities periodical titles, gathered together from many collections. Special Collections image They date from the early 18th century and cover literature, fine arts, performing arts, bibliography and book arts, politics, philosophy and fashion. There are titles from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the USA, and Africa as well as Britain. The English 18th century titles include The Anti-Jacobin Review (1799-1812), The Critical Review (1756-1800), the Independent Whig (1720-21), the North Briton (1763), and the Gentleman's Magazine from 1731. Of particular interest are the illustrated papers and magazines such as Punch (1841-1924), The Graphic (1872-97), Fun (1867-79), the Illustrated London News (1842-97) and the Studio (1893-1962).

The Foreign titles include the Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek (1765-92), Bibliotheque Françoise (1751-56), Der Deutsche Merkur (1773-90), Giornale de' letterati (1771-96), Histoire (and Memoires ) de l'Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (1717-1808), Mercure de France (1791), Mercurio d'Italia (1796), Observations sur les écrits modernes (1735-43) and a very long run of the Revue des Deux Mondes (1835-1940).

There are a number of titles concerning book production, the book arts and librarianship as well as the fine arts, performing arts and literature.
